On this random Tuesday we were to go to Ordrupgaard, a museum in two buildings, one from the 1800's and one recently built extension by Zaha Hadid. This is an excellent example of how the Danes are so willing to connect modern and old architecture. The old part of the building had always housed exquisite art and been designed to be a museum. It was build as a summer house and when the family was away was open to public viewings of the art. There were pieces by Picasso, Monet and Renoir there, something I didn't at all expect to see! The building itself was also beautiful with large back windows opening up onto a courtyard. Built on the property in the 1940s, a little ways away, was the last house ever designed by Finn Juhl where he lived with his wife until 1989. Finn Juhl was an architect with a special interest in furniture, giving him an interesting edge and mindset about how houses should be built. He thought that the furniture should be designed first and then the rooms, and lastly the facade. This led to perfectly fitting furniture and interesting angles and designs within the home. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside the house but here's some I found on the internet. We also heard a lecture about the history of furniture designers which was interesting.

Following this tour, the four members of my studio, missing one, were led to our professor Eva's home for dinner. This was such a cool experience and showed how different teacher/student relationships are here. We had a wonderful home cooked meal, something I had been missing! We had salmon and potatoes and veggies, a typical bland but so good Danish dish, and for dessert an authentic jam-like pudding made from berries and mixed with milk and creme in your bowl. I later found out it was supposed to be more like jello and had gelatin in it, so good thing I'm not a die hard vegetarian anymore. I can't for the life of me pronounce the name of this dish, it just ends up sounding like im choking (its written Rodgrod med Flode with all the o's with a line through them). Her home was beautiful as could be expected, and was such a fun night!
Not my picture but exactly what we had!
